Reading through a recipe and not sure what specific equipment you are being asked to use? We created a quick visual guide to help you get a better idea.
Chopping board. Every kitchen needs one, probably more. Make sure to keep it clean. They come in wood, plastic and every shape and size you can think of.
Chef's knife. Again, you are going to want a few different shapes and sizes, however, you have to have a good chef's knife. Keep it sharp! Nothing is more dangerous in a kitchen than a dull knife.
Bread knife. Also called a serrated knife.
Pots and pans. You have to cook in something. Make sure you have a wide, versatile range if you plan on cooking lots of things at one go.
Frying pan. Will usually come with a set of pots and pans. You will also want a couple, some which are 'non-stick'.
Skillet / Oven proof pan. These come in all shapes and sizes. You want something with no plastic or wooden elements that can go directly into the oven to finish cooking something off.
Sieve, colander, strainer. Many names, one function. Water bye-bye. In case you were wondering the difference, a sieve is a fiber version of a colander.
Spoons! Need to mix something hot. Don't want to burn your hands? Use a spoon. Just like chopping boards you can also get plastic ones.
Baking tray! Bonus item - Baking paper. Goes straight into the oven. Don't want your food sticking to the tray? Line it with baking paper. Also called wax paper.
We hope this has helped you. Missed anything? Let us know and we will be sure to add it.
